Cassiopeia boasted that her daughter was more beautiful than the Nereids, which angered the sea god Poseidon. To punish them, Poseidon sent a sea monster, Cetus, to ravage their kingdom. To appease the gods, Andromeda was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to the monster.
